Her recognition as Woman of the Year by STEM for Her is a testament to her enduring impact on the technology sector and her dedication to fostering opportunities for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Graduating in 1964 with a mathematics degree from Saint Mary's College, Fran embarked on a career in computer programming at a time when the field was predominantly male-dominated. Undeterred by societal norms, she broke barriers and laid the groundwork for future women in technology. Her professional journey included significant roles at AT&T, where she honed her skills and developed a passion for innovative solutions.
In 1988, Fran founded Unanet, a software company that has become a leader in project-based ERP and CRM solutions. She has served on the board of STEM for Her, contributing her expertise and resources to inspire young women to explore careers in science and technology. Her philanthropic efforts include a generous endowment to establish The Frances Bardello Craig '64 Leadership Program in Mathematics and Computer Science at Saint Mary's College, designed to support student research, internships, and leadership development for women in STEM.
Fran's dedication to community and mentorship extends to her involvement with The Women's Center, where Unanet awarded the Fran Craig Grant to support adolescent mental health initiatives. This grant underscores her holistic approach to empowerment, recognizing the importance of mental well-being in achieving professional success.
Fran’s philanthropy also reaches directly into her community where she is a major contributor to the Loudoun Symphony and the Northern Virginia Science Center. She and her family proudly sponsor the Craig Family Gallery at the Science Center featuring Wonder, an interactive experience where young people can explore STEM in an age-appropriate and inspiring manner.
Working with the Loudoun Education Foundation (LEF), Unanet seeded the Loudoun County Public School computer coding curriculum, efforts that attracted important funding and support, and continue to impact in the county’s public schools. Now, as an Honorary Trustee of LEF and a member of various industry associations, Fran continues to advocate for education and professional development. Fran’s story is not just one of personal success but also of a profound commitment to paving the way for future generations of women leaders in STEM.
